Purchasing cheap rims

Perhaps the best way to spruce up your car or truck is to add on some nice aftermarket rims and tires.  The rims give the vehicle some much needed flash and will help to set it apart from the crowd.  The unfortunate part about this modification is the price, and that holds many back from making the purchase.

Typically, it’s the performance minded enthusiasts who shop for aftermarket rims. I myself, speaking for fellow enthusiasts, will say that we are looking to improve the performance of our vehicles, along with the looks.  For cars we look for larger diameter rims and wider, lower profile tires.  The lower profile tires create less side roll as the car corners, and the wider rubber patch increase traction.

Finding a good set of cheap rims is basically an oxymoron, because you typically get what you pay for.  We all, however, likely have our eye on a particular type, made by the top name brand available.  Well there’s nothing cheap about $2000 rims, but there are often cheaper solutions.

Top brand name racing rims are usually made in the interests of maximum performance, at the expense of price.  They’re typically made from expensive, super a lightweight metal or alloy, and made to exacting standards.  Top brand styles typically have a knock off brand out there for a fraction of the price, however.  They will have a very similar style, but are made from cheaper, heavier alloys and will likely have a lower quality finish.  Not that these rims are in anyway unsafe, they’re not typically made with the intention of hard core racing, but will be a perfect alternative for daily driving and casual track use.

Other ways to score a set of cheap rims is by buying used.  So many enthusiasts will sell their aftermarket rims and tires separately from their vehicle sale, as a way to recoup their investment.  You will often find a nice set of used tires to go along with the rims.  Other options are trading for some used rims and tires, typically if you already have a set you’re wanting to trade with.  Often money will have to change hands in these deals, and the tires included are often completely worn out, but it’s a great way to save.

So check your local online forums and bulletin boards, you may just find a cheap set that will fit your vehicle.
