Early in the Twentieth Century around 1917, an ambulance driver in France decided to pull out a pen and paper to describe his experiences during World War One. First you’ll want your suitcase to be highly maneuverable.  The best designs come with four spinning wheels that can move in any direction.  You’ll even find four wheels on the bottom of basic duffel bag designs and cheap wheeled holdalls these days.  With four wheels the bag does not even need to be tilted via the telescopic handle but can be pushed around in an vertical position – very helpful for long check in lines.  Wheels are often a point of vulnerability as they protrude from the suitcase and can get stuck on things, so make sure they are solidly built into the structure of the suitcase itself.

The trouble with some hard sided suitcases is that they pick up scratches and scrapes very easily.  Some of the newer models have rubberized protective coatings to avoid this, with the result that your suitcase will look newer for far longer.

Expandable sections are now offered by many brands.  But although the idea may seem tempting at first, you may find that you hardly use this extra capacity.  Airline luggage weight restrictions are getting more restrictive, with far less wiggle room, so filling a suitcase up to its maximum expanded capacity will often tip you over the allowable weight limit.

When it comes to color, you should find that you have a lot of choice.   Bright pink suitcases, yellow, orange – you name it, you’ll find it.  But a word of caution, try to avoid purchasing a suitcase from a fashion label that does not have a track record in suitcase manufacture.  In the long term it’s probably best to purchase from a known luggage brand, even if the color is not exactly what you are after.
